In 1899 Gyokuei published a woodblock-printed picture album entitled Mōhitsu Kachō Gajō (i.e., Picture Album of Flower and Bird Brush Paintings). The album’s twenty pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Gyokuei’s method of drawing flowers and birds combined the expression of Chinese amateur painting with the realistic depiction of objects found in European art.
